MADMIKE WINS 2009 NZDRIFT CHAMPIONSHIP
Heading into the final round I was sitting in 2nd place and there was only 22 points separating me from the championship leader Gaz Whiter. For me to take the title it meant I needed to finish one spot ahead of Gaz and qualify 2 spots ahead to claim the championship. My sights were set high to qualify 1st and finish 1st and I was super confident to make this happen.
Pukekohe being my favorite track with the infamous entry “widow maker” sweeper which is a 5th gear full throttle 200+kmh corner! The judges had really asked for carnage when they announced they want us to run a new line, and made it an outside clipping zone around the entire sweeper.
The team had been hard at work preparing the RX8 for this final..

D1NZ Annual Awards
Hey Team,
Well after a great series from the team at D1NZ they announced that they would be having an annual awards dinner for the 2009 Championship at Albany stadium.
The awards dinner took place last weekend and it had a great turnout from all the drivers, teams and sponsors throughout NZ.
It was a very successful night for my team. I was nominated for 13 of 17 different award categories available and brought home 6 awards in total including ‘New Zealands Drift Ambassador'.

NZDrift Round 3 Taupo
Only 2 weeks out from the D1NZ finals we were scheduled to be at Taupo Motorsport Park for round 3 of the NZDRIFT series. After a 2nd and a 3rd placing at the open rounds I was ready a confident to stand tall at this round after the changes we had made to the RX8. The car has improved so much in only 4 competitions. On Saturday afternoon we kicked the rig into gear and headed south with clear skies however the forecast was to turn bad for tomorrows race day. Sunday morning Taupo was fogged over but no rain and the track was in dry condition for our testing sessions first thing.

D1NZ Finals Port Nikau Whangarei 14th - 15th August
Since the last round of NZDRIFT at Pukekohe which was only our second competition we had done in the new RX8 we discovered a few things that we needed to change as it was a real struggle to battle through the field to the podium. Firstly the steering, I found that after fabricating a RX7 FD steering rack into the RX8 it felt a lot better to steer however the steering lock was still no where near effective. In drifting one of the top judged criteria’s is BIG angle so the team got to work and stripped down the front end fabricating our own hub up-rights and a few other little secrets to ensure the RX8 would now play the game. The other main problem was our gearbox. We have blown two FD 5speed boxes both times we have taken the RX8 out. We always knew the factory FD box was not going to handle the torque and power from the 3rotor turbo set-up but needed to make do until we find a budget to help with another HKS sequential box. I had a plan.....
